Miners Celebrate First Win of the Season
Miners win against Chinooks 8-1
It's safe to say that Opening Day 2024 was a success for the Mat-Su Miners as they became road warriors by defeating the Chugiak-ER Chinooks by a final score of 8-1.
The game started off as somewhat of a pitcher's duel as both sides saw great efforts from their starting arms. Sam Houston Bearkat Ryan Peterson started off the season for Mat-Su as he pitched 4 solid innings with 1 Hit given up. The Chinooks had their own dynamite pitcher as Frankie Gulko was able to keep the game scoreless for the same amount of time, but he could only hold back the Miners bats for so long.
In the 5th Inning, Mat-Su would strike first as Ryan Richard was able to beat out a throw to home plate to score on a fielder's choice against the Chugiak defense. Now a snowball was rolling down the hill which would quickly escalate into an avalanche. The 6th Inning would end up proving decisive for both sides.
In that 6th Inning, the party got started when Nick Ferri was walked early on and would advance all the way to 3rd without a hit being delivered thanks to a wild pitch and a stolen base. Then Logan Vaughan would join him on base via another walk before an RBI Single by Ryan Richard would open the floodgates. The Miners would score 5 Runs total in the 6th Inning, and saw RBIs from Drake Kerr along with 2 unearned runs from Richard and Patrizi.
From that point forward, the Miners were off to the races like John Force and never looked back. Ben Detaeye out of Iowa would come in relief of Peterson and have an incredible 4 innings in his own right with no runs allowed for 4 straight frames. In the 9th Inning, the Miners put the hammer down with 2 more runs brought in by Nick Bisaccia and Ryan Richard to bring the score to 8-0 for Mat-Su. In the final frame, the Incarnate Word product Luke Smith would come in to finish the job for the Miners, but would allow a run to Chugiak before closing the deal.
On offense, Ryan Richard and Drake Kerr were most golden for the Miners with 3 Hits Each. Richard on his own also had 2 Runs scored and 2 RBIs to go along with his total. Dom Patrizi and Ryker Schow were also able to put 2 RBIs on the board while Mat-Su ended the game with 9 total Hits. The Pitching Staff was excellent as Ryan Peterson, Ben Detaeye, and Luke Smith combined for just 3 Hits given up, 1 Earned Run, and 4 Strikeouts.
The "Rally in the Valley" is just beginning in 2024 as Mat-Su will have a major test in their home opener tomorrow night in a Top of the World Championship Series Rematch. The Anchorage Glacier Pilots await in what should be a classic. As for now though, Mat-Su can celebrate the first step to getting back on top of ABL mountain.
